Session 1 with Cumbria Wildlife Trust
Over this half term, we are going to be working with Jamie from Cumbria Wildlife Trust for three sessions. Today was our first, and boy did he inspire us!
He began by ensuring we all know what wildlife is and why it is classified as wildlife. Through this, he told us a number of stories about different wildlife.
We then went out into our school grounds to look at wildlife and habitats. First we looked at the mole hills that had been formed. We found a lot of worms, which were all coming out of the ground where we were standing. He told us all about a bird that taps the ground to entice the worms out so then they can eat them and we were recreating this process, without the eating!! Orlagh was very observant and found some ladybirds sleeping on the wooden fence, Jamie shared with us a number of facts about ladybirds.
We then went back in to school and we dressed Mrs Capstick as a tree. We thought about the different parts of a tree and add these to Mrs Capstick. We then added different wildlife to the tree, thinking very carefully about which part of the tree we would find them at and why. Harry took some of the leaves of the tree and put them on the ground over the top of the hedgehog and said it was hibernating.
Finally, we thought about what we could do in our school grounds to improve the wildlife. This really created some excellent discussions and enthused all of us to think about what we could do both in school and at home. We had these ideas, plus lots more:
- Plant more trees
- Make bird boxes
- Make a hedgehog house
- Make bird feeders
- Plant more flowers for spring and summer
- Make more bug hotels
We can't wait to work with Jamie again next week.
